The Waterford mouthpiece is combined with Butterfly Flip cheeks, to offer varying degrees of control and poll pressure depending on the setting of the reins, while deterring the horse from leaning.
Waterford mouthpiece
The Waterford mouthpiece is made up of a series of ball links, making it flexible in all directions. It moulds around the horse's mouth, creating even pressure, so it is suitable for most types of mouth conformation, including horses with large tongues.
The moveable nature of the links and the loose rings encourage the horse to mouth the bit, soften to the contact and lift the forehand.
As there is nothing rigid for the horse to latch on to, the Waterford can be very useful for giving the rider extra control on horses that tend to lean on the bit, set their jaw or take hold of the bit.
Butterfly Flip
Butterfly Flip bits are named after Malin Baryard-Johnsson's legendary show jumper Butterfly Flip. The butterfly flip bit offers different rein positions to give varying degrees of control and poll pressure.
The Butterfly Flip functions as both a direct action bit and a leverage bit depending on the position of the reins.
If the rein is attached to the top hook, it works as a direct action bit, exerting the same amount of pressure on the mouth as it felt through the reins. If the rein is attached to the bottom hook, it works as a leverage bit, tilting the mouthpiece forward and applying pressure to the mouth, curb and poll.
A curb strap can be added to the upper ring to add chin pressure while reducing poll pressure, helping to sit the horse up more into the fence.
